Dwarves stockpile items marked for dumping
« on: April 01, 2008, 09:39:00 pm »

After a siege, I go through and mark all of the goblin gear either for melting or dumping. However, I frequently find that some of the narrow clothing gets stashed in my finished goods stockpile (which has no available toggle for "usable"/"unusable") before getting dumped. Dwarves should not stash dumped gear; they should dump it.

Additionally, it'd be nice if finished-goods stockpiles could be marked to not accumulate goblin clothing.

Is it possible that some of the dwarves already had the "Store item in stockpile" job when you marked the item for dumping?  If this was the situation, then I suppose you're asking for the following:  Marking an item for dumping should check if any job is associated with that item.  If so, kill the job if it isn't a dump job.  Or at least, kill the job if it is merely a haul job.  (If someone is already attempting to acquire it for some other purpose, then perhaps that should get priority over dumping.  Or perhaps not; I wouldn't know what would be preferable, and if that preference would be shared by the majority of players.)

It's entirely possible that I marked them for dumping after they had already been marked to take to the stockpile, since stockpile jobs, to my knowledge, can be generated at any time and I only got around to dumping things once I was sure the siege was over. So yes, I'm saying that if a dwarf gets a "move to stockpile" job, then they should cancel it if the item is marked for dumping.

Could also be that you have dwarves set to ignore refuse outside so they ignored the dump order 'til they took it in.

Refuse is distinct from dumping; these are perfectly good items that I just don't want. I certainly have seen them pick up items off the goblin corpses and haul them directly to the garbage pit (actually a shaft to the magma pipe), so that's not the problem.

Syndication is right about the refuse order, however. I thought that Toady had disabled dumping of rocks once when I upgraded (back in the .33's), because they weren't being hauled away (I had done some channeling or something, so they were outside). Once I realized that ignore outside refuse was turned on, and toggled it, away went the rocks.

But, yes, if they're dumping other outdoor items, that's not the problem.
