Dwarves and pets
« on: January 30, 2011, 11:09:25 am »

I'm having a problem with my dwarves stealing all my puppies so I can't train them into war dogs when they grow up.

I've set all the animals as 'unavailable' in the z, Animals menu. But they still take them. I know cats will adopt dwarves, but should the dwarves obey the restriction? How do I keep them from stealing the dogs so I can bolster the military?

I think you have to cage them right at birth. A pit won't do as dwarfs can adopt pets through walls. But a cage will prevent adoptions from taking place. Then take them out one at a time and train them right away.

I have never, ever seen an animal (other than a cat or kitten) be adopted by a dwarf without first being set to available on the 'animals' screen.  I just checked a long-running fortress and verified that every one of the dozens of puppies running around was set as 'unavailable' and not owned by any dwarf.  The quetsion then is, what are you doing in your fortress that's making these puppies get adopted anyway?  Did you mod dogs to have the VERMINHUNTER tag or someting?

Are you sure they didn't come in with migrants? They might have already been someones' pets.

Ah, that might be it. It looks like they none of the original 7 have any pets. And I have a fair number of puppys.

Also, my carpenter (who a little while ago was possessed and produced a legendary spiked barrel) was adopted by 3 cats.
