Background: (Jenkins from ME1), it was only a flesh wound and Shepard never checked the body... His suits medigel dispenser actually kept him alive long enough to be found by an Alliance search and rescue team, this has changed his personality somewhat and he is now much less eager to be deployed on frontline missions, instead preferring to assist his allies from a safe distance.
Anything else you want to add: His name actually is Richard L. Jenkins and the ME wiki confirms that the L is for Leeroy. I liked him and wanted him to survive, albeit as a less idealistic person. The backstory is mostly just to explain why he is now an engineer, and basically gives him an excuse to survive.
