Pump stacks
« on: January 29, 2011, 02:16:46 pm »

So, I'm going to do a megaproject that involves atttaching floors to the sky using obsidian casting, but I can't wrap my head around a pump stack in 2D. Could someone please post some Stonesense or Overseer screenies of a pumpstack? Thanks in advance! :D

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

Okay, here is what it should look like:

If that didn't make any sense (which is probable), go there- http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Pump_stack#Pump_Stack

Bear in mind that in order to pass power vertically from one pump to the next, the solid (dark green) part of each pump must be built over a hole in the floor.

... so to prepare a shaft for the pump-stack, you will want to dig and channel out a vertical section that looks like:

Code: [Select]
O_O_
_O_O
O_O_
_O_O
O_O_
_O_O
...

... with each hole directly over a floor, and vice-versa: each floor directly over a hole.

So, you can have pumps transfer power within the stack?

Yes, as long as they are touching and there is enough power.

Right... that's why you need to first channel away the floor that will be directly under the solid block of each pump... they have to actually TOUCH, which means that there cannot be a floor in between them, only an open space.

From the wiki:

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
