Over-powered bowmen
« on: August 22, 2006, 04:45:00 pm »

Besides being over-powered and insta-mortal wound inflicting, bowmen have got a wrestling related bug. Namely, grabbing their bow doesn't prevent them from shooting. Basicly, at zero range you're dead meat and your only hope right now is killing them by throwing stuff at them while sneaking.

Yeah, there are a lot of problems with those guys.  In general, having your weapon grabbed only prevents melee I think, which is sort of backward if anything.

I kinda find it realistic for the bowmen to be as dangerous as they are. For me the occasional insta-kills and such are okay from bowmen, but grabbing the bow should stop them from firing. I think being in melee range should prevent firing, too. Not necessarily just being in an adjacent square, but as the game seems to keep track of facing, how about facing the bowman in an adjacent square?

I say arrows should be slightly more dodgable. I mean, we're supposed to be controlling a legend here. :P

I know this is kind of a fantasy thing, but should bows be made of metal? A copper bow as a melee weapon basicly works just as well as any other blunt weapon, except the aim seems even better.

I notice that arrows have a massively higher chance of wounding and critical-hitting me. My dwarf is almost never hit in melee, but pretty much every arrow attack I've received has either left me bleeding, given me a mortal wound, or knocked out one of my eyes.      :) You'd think my mighty iron shield would give me some sort of protection, and actually I have seen a few deflects, but an order of magnitude less blockage than I see in melee.

"The flying *copper arrow* strikes You in the upper body!"
"It is badly pierced!"
"you are having tgrouble breathing!"
"Your right lung has been pierced!"
"Your left lung has been pierced!"
"Your heart has been pierced!"
"Your upper spine has been badly pierced!"
"You give into pain."
"You fall over."
*I then proceed to be shot four more times. Each shot hurts me. A kobold swordsman hacks at me and the shot glances away. The fourth arrow kills me*

Holy crap, fragmentation arrow!

edit: I just noticed this kobold is an ELITE bowman. That kinda explains it.

edit: I found out how to beat him. Couldn't take him on directly, his first or second hit would invariably incapacitate or kill me outright. Instead, I brought along 7 unwitting human adventurers, and waited around the corner, sneaking, while the archer used up his every last arrow. After that they were barely any threat to me at all, though they were still capable of bashing my hirelings to death with their bows; handy, since I don't know how else I was going to get rid of them  ;)

Oddly enough though, with this character the game now freezes whenever I save. Thankfully it's at the 'save successful' stage, so I just restart and I begin from the save I just did. I think the issue is that it's refusing to offload the site, because whenever I get to the overland map and try to move it hangs on 'Offloading site...'

That was an elite bowman with a masterwork arrow, too.

My best bet agains't bowmen is a sneaky thrower/wrestler with a few copper spears (until I find some I need to stay away from them :\). Oh, and best shoot them when they're still just a glow in the dark. Also, this is kinda cheating but, thrown arrows are almost as deadly as fired ones and don't dissapear like those. Heck, they're almost as effective as a spear in melee, too.

And concerning throwing, it's impossible to hit someone prone when sneaking for some reason. :\
