"Damp stone located" message doesn't always a
« on: January 29, 2008, 05:48:00 pm »

The "damp stone located" message doesn't always appear.  I was digging a new room, and the fortress started filling with water.  I had no warning.  I thing it's an aquifer.

Were you perhaps digging upwards into an aquifer?

I have an aquifer in one of three biomes at my fortress, and I constantly dig around it. I always got a "damp stone" message except for the one time where I tried to dig a shaft upwards. Suddenly the shaft filled with water and I had to get my dwarves out.

I'm still wondering whether this was a bug, or working as designed (on the rationale that an aquifer must have a bottom layer that is impermeable to water, else it couldn't hold the water, and this bottom layer should look dry if viewed from beneath), or whether I simply goofed up and told my dwarves to dig in an area already marked as damp (but I think the latter is very unlikely).

If you weren't digging upward another possibility is that you just happened to dig right up to the damp stone.  You only get the damp stone warning if the stone is blindly designated and then you reveal it, you don't get a damp stone warning if you try to dig into stone already revealed as damp.

I wasn't digging upwards.  I didn't see any warning that the stone was damp, but that could be because I pressed the arrow keys so fast.  I had not previously gotten a damp stone warning for the stone.  The game should always give you at least one warning.

If the stone is already revealed it will just show up as damp when you're in the designation menu.  It's very clear what stone is damp there's no need for the game to warn you when you can plainly see it.  The reason the warning exists is so if you are digging a long tunnel or something your dwarfs won't just keep digging into an unknown pond, auqifier, river, whatever without you knowing.

(added to this thread to avoid creating a new one)

A problem I've been having about damp rock warnings is that that they always fire for the grid directly underneath a river or pond, despite the fact that, when dug out normally (as opposed to designating an upwards staircase, two-way staircase, or ramp), no water ever pours through the still-solid roof.

I'd much prefer to see a non-distracting damp indicator (such as a small blue dot) when I go to designate an area, and get the current behavior only when I designate something that will actually break through the ceiling.

This is intentional, for instance if you find an underground river you'll run into it on 3 z levels, not 1.  It makes sense that that should be so, as well as making it harder for the player to know whether that tile is safe or not.

I'd like to see the damp stone warning when digging up as well. nothing breaks a fort quite like accidentally piercing the aquifer from below.
