I saw someone talk about being able to name there dwarfs (AFAIK through non hacking regular in game methods) and these names being passed on to children....to make family lines...is this possible (they didn't respond on the thread it was mentioned on...where I asked)

You can give your dwarves custom nicknames through the status screen (v over a dwarf, press p, then z), but those will not be passed on. Of course, you can give them a "family name" and then rename the children accordingly. What you want is not possible, neither through modding nor hacking... only if the Toady decides to implement it into the game some day, which I believe might be planned.
