Why not just embark on a volcano easy magma.
Going though all the trouble with a fire imp doesn't seem worth it.

But, really, wouldn't the most dwarfy fireplace just be to trap a few fireimps in a glass cage? Burns indefinitly too! Reminds me of something I read or saw where lamps were just pixies or something trapped in lanterns.
