Arx Fatalis open sourced? Ye?

so this past week, Arkane Studios announced that Arx Fatalis is going opensource via GPL and they also released a new patch for the game to be compatible with windows vista and 7. is this going to be gold?

LOL god damnit I just bought that game on STEAM!  That should be really cool though.  Would be awesome to make an Ultima Underworld remake with that engine, since I guess it was the "unofficial" UW3.

so far you have to buy the game in order to use the souce code.

Never fear, purchasers - while the source code has been opened up, the game assets haven't been. So, you still need to purchase the game to play it - you can download and compile the source without it, but all you'll get for your trouble is a steady stream of "Missing file" warnings.  :P

That said, from what I've heard, the code's a bit of a mess. And by that, I've had several programmers swear to me that several aspects (rendering engine in particular) look like an absolute hack job, assembled with a serious "just make it work somehow!" mentality. So don't count on a complete open-source revamp coming any time soon - it could be months before the ragged chunks of code are refactored appropriately.  :(

Yup, there's an SDL version of Homeworld as a result among other things.
