frozen lye

I've been buying barrels of lye from the dwarven traders, but it keeps freezing. Then my dwarves ignore it and won't put it in the stockpile. Is there a way to remedy this?

Dump the barrels underground. Alternatively, under-floor magma heating from the depot to underground.

Why are you buying lye when half your military are proficient at making it?

My map has plenty of wood, but My dwarves don't go outside my walls much anymore because of the threat of ambushes. I mean a threat to my civilians. My military is BEAST.
