Noob difficulties with pumps
« on: January 12, 2011, 04:50:02 am »

Hello mighty dwarfs !

I am new to the game, and I have had some difficulties making a pump stack. My first pump stack (which was a magma stack) started leaking at 2 different points in the column and I have no idea why.
My layout was:
R S S .                             (R)amps (S)crew pump  . = hole  (D)oor   W(all)
D WDW

Anyone have an idea why ?

Thank you

If it started leaking at two different points, and all points were supposedly identical, I'd be looking into the materials of those pumps, as well as checking that each level really is identical. What's it look like once the stack is turned off?

Did the pump-stack pump all the way up? Or did the leaking prevent it from working?

Were the pump output tiles completely enclosed (i.e. surrounded by 7 walls/doors, plus the pump output tile for the 8th)?

An aside tip: you can use
...
to make pretty diagrams.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Did you make sure that all your pumps are alternating in orientation?

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

I just completely seal my pump stacks in with Masonry, after they're finished but before running them. No leaks there.
