So, traps huh?
« on: January 13, 2011, 05:22:10 pm »

I cannot for the life of me make traps work.
I put a pressure plate on the floor, and next to it, a spike/spear trap. then when i try to connect the two, the pressure plate doesn't seem to register the spear/spike trap.

You need to register the pressure that activates it to whatever you want to step on it. If you want it to turn on at the slightest touch, register it for Furry Maggot, and if you only want it to turn on with extreme pressure, set it at Bronze Colossus.

You have to build upright spikes/spears not weapon traps with spears in them.

Is it a tundra? Maybe he likes "vanilla ice cream" and leaves your dorfs be. ::)

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

Depends on what you mean. I've had giants and the like cage trapped before without doing anything fancy. Some creatures can avoid traps (kobolds are a fairly early example).

Further, depending on what you're attempting, it sounds more like you want either a weapon trap (filled with menacing spikes) rather than a pressure plate and spike trap, or a spike trap linked to a manually pulled lever, rather than a pressure plate.

If you're imagining a trap that goes off when people step on it and spikes them, use a Weapon Trap (filled with menacing spikes) instead. If you're imagining a room where spikes shoot out of the floor over and over without stopping, use a lever on repeat.

I'm not sure if you can link a pressure plate to a spike trap, but if you could, it sounds odd. The person triggering the trap would pretty much never be in the spikes when they went off...

Linking up levers, to a spear or spike traps original purpose, was to allow you to remove the impaled victim from it. Once pulled, the dwarves could reclaim the stuck gobbo.
Weapon traps will never hurt a healthy dwarf, cage traps either, they just know where they are, and dodge them. So when you hook a pressure plate, continually repeating, to a spear trap, any nearby dwarf gets extra dodge, deflecting with weapons, or shields, as he has to continually have to react to it.
I would seriously bet, if you set up a patrol route, through a narrow corridor, lined with spear traps, would give same bonus as a danger room, without hooked to a repeater. A pressure plate assigned to a spike trap would be near worthless, since it would not help at all, if it was retracted. Think pungi sticks

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
