Nitre Beds
« on: January 10, 2011, 05:39:59 pm »

I'm wondering if it might be possible to make something like a farm plot that instead takes rotting substances and turns it into salt peter which could then be used in combination with "lead pellets" to make bullets for guns (which are easy enough to mod into the game now with custom workshops and items and such)

If not, is there a way to make a workshop that takes rotting substances and turns them into salt peter by way of a labor?

I know this is sort of beside the point, but saltpeter isn't all that's necessary for gunpowder. The classic recipe is that, charcoal (or some other form of good carbon), and sulfur.

At any rate, I'm not sure if you can have a workshop accept body parts, but you almost certainly can't specify rotting materials.

Dang. That's a real shame :S

Preeeetty sure it was necessary to the process of getting USABLE gun powder >>; less effected by moisture in the air, and the fact urine was used meant that the granules became more uniform in size, making it easier and safer to shoot guns.

Potassium nitrate alone won't do jack. You need something that'll actually burn.

You need fuel (carbon in charcoal) and an oxidizer (potassium nitrate).  The sulfur isn't technically required, but it makes the gunpowder faster-burning and easier to ignite.  Charcoal and sulfur alone won't make gunpowder at all.
