platinum & aluminum
« on: January 07, 2011, 12:56:44 pm »

what should i make out of these metals?  should i save them and make functional things or metal craft them into objects for trade?  i just made an aluminum statue for my statue garden and its worth 3000 which is more than i thought it would be.  if its best to make things for trade, what is the most profitable crafts?

Keep the metal for moods and mandates.

Edit: Typo.

I think dwarves only have moods once in their life, a lack of immigrants could stop moods.

Sometimes i get the impression, that moods happen just after important events, like a routed siege or a killed megabeast. But other times it just seems totally random.
On one fort i get 10 possessions in a row on other forts i get the good moods every year like a clockwork, despite nothing happening.

yeah only one mood per dwarf.

If you ever have a weaponsmith who likes hammers get a mood stick him in a burrow with a platinum bars only stockpile, if you get a platinum warhammer you will have a great weapon.
Aluminum i usually turn into statues or roads (latter to fulfill the king requirement). But then again gold has the same value and is a lot more plentiful.

Isn't Platinum supposed to be really good for blunt weapons because of its density?

Apparently only if you're lucky enough to get a lucky Mood. >.<

In 40d, you could only get strange moods if you had at least 20 eligible dwarves and you had revealed a sufficient number of subterranean tiles (and in the old 2D version, there was seemingly a further cap of 15 artifacts per fortress). If the "revealed tiles" constraint is still present in 0.31, discovering an underground cavern should be enough to permit dozens of strange moods.

Aluminum i usually turn into statues or roads (latter to fulfill the king requirement). But then again gold has the same value and is a lot more plentiful.

Gold is only worth 30 (the same as steel, in fact) - platinum and aluminum are worth 40.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Oh, did it actually count tiles? If that's it I'm gonna send someone reveal more of the 2nd layer that's sadly covered in 80% water. A limit is probably not in this version I'm counting 40 pieces currently.

You haven't lived until one of your dwarfs get in a mood and make an aluminum war hammer.

I modded in DU arrowheads for my "RPG" mod (that I haven't posted [yet]). Just sayin'  :D

Caverns are usually deep, as in about 10-15-20 z-levels deep. in 31.X, in 40d no caverns

Aluminum I save for moods.  Single tile stockpiles strategically placed near all workshops.

I mod platinum to be usable for weapons.  It makes a good axe, great hammer.
