I, too, am near 20,000 years. I'm just going to accept it when it gets there.

Ended worldgen at year 20001, with about 165,000 historical figures.

Insane. Thank you for the test, that's very fun to know! I love making weird worlds and then just sticking to that one lore forever and ever (I have a 40d world, Osmlo Xagu, that I'll never get rid of. Extensive stories have been written and drawn about it, I know some civ's stories by heart, etc.).  If I could get a 25,000 year old world... I'd be in heaven! I'll get on that as soon as this one is done. If only I could remember how old I set it for...

What end year and size do you want? I could run one for you and send it to you.

Or, at least try to.

The reason the game crashes is because it probably slams into the 2GB memory limit for 32bit apps in Windows and probably same limit under linux/OSX, but I'm not sure.

I generated a 10k year world before that ended up with several million events and over 1 million historical figures and the game was using a bit over 1.8gb of ram. I was *that* close to have it crash. Took awhile to generate :p I may have it saved somewhere still... I'll give creating another one a shot.

This has been discussed in this forum in the past:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=57329.msg1252303#msg1252303

In that thread I posted information from my test.  I was personally able to gen a huge world up to around 7k years. just with the default settings.  But at a certain point the world generator uses two much RAM and around 2GB it'll crash.

There are settings that can be used to bump it up to 10k though on a large island map, if done correctly.

Yeah, the 2Gb thing is a limitation of 32-bit addressing.  If you watch the process carefully, you can "tune" top get the oldest possible world.  As worldgen goes on though, there is more and more history, which needs more and more ram to hold on to.  Presumably, if it was an actual issue, Toady could relatively easily have the memory get dumped to temporary files periodically, but since, as of the current version at least, the year 300 and the year 30,000 have no real differences, there is not yet cause to do so.

The barrier could also be surpassed if Toady felt inclined to start pumping out 64-bit binaries, but again that's a bit of a headache (not impossible, but at least as much work as linux and mac support) and only offers very dubious potential gains.

I managed to get a large island to the year 2010 once - those megabeasts had some absurdly long kill lists.

I had a max size region at a little over 2500 years earlier when it crashed. :(

Tried for 9000 years on a normal world size.

Got to 8600? then  I ended it. When ending...

I guess that it doesn't care how much RAM you have for world genning, at least over 2 gig, as I have 8 gig and get around the same levels as other people, and I would guess most have about 2-4gb.
