The saddest thing is when a father outlives his son.

Or daughter, in this case.
Smige Melaono, Guard: "My eldest daughter was named Lastta Bonesrun.  In 1023, Lastta Bonesrun died of old age."

The very latest old man Smige could have been born was 951 (had a daughter at age 12, who lived only 60 years), making him no less than 100 years old.  I guess keeping active does wonders for your health.

Lucky that this isn't the saddest thing then.

I saw one peasant and all his family was dead of old age. Nephews, parents, grandparents, children, brothers. All dead. I let him join his family.

oldest guy I can remember was a guild rep or someone like that in a human town.  he got married in the early 950's, and several of his kids had died of old age.  He musta been about 117 or something

Yeah, the outliving of one's children is relatively common.  It's all due to the fact that humans have a maximum age between 60 and 120.  That's a pretty wide gap, so if daddy happens to be of the 120 persuasion, he could have a kid at the ripe age of 59 and still outlive her if she was at the other end of the spectrum.

In some cases they outlive grandchildren because of the huge gap as well.

I'm sure at some point Toady is going to put more causes of death in so that these things make a little more sense. Say, if someone dies from the ages of 60-80, their cause of death will be "a mysterious illness" more often than old age. The mysterious illness in the real world would be heart disease, cancer, hereditary conditions, and what have you...

It'd be functionally the same thing as living up to your "predetermined maximum age," but the reasoning behind it would make a bit more sense.
