Digging with Ramps
« on: December 15, 2007, 08:31:00 pm »

In tunnels, the "Dig Upwards Ramp" works fine when I'm trying to go from high to low, but when my dwarfs dig ramps to go up, they have some problems. Unless there's a floor tile next to the ramp, the dwarfs won't use the ramp to mine out the area above.

code:

Floor 0:
█████
██▼██
█████

Floor -1:

█████
██▲
█████

To get to -1, you'd have to be going down the ramp from the left.

No bug.

Yes, it is a bug. You clearly didn't read what he wrote. He's talking about going from -1 to 0, and the fact that you cannot use a ramp to dig higher because dwarves will not stand on the upper tile of a ramp.

This has been around since 33a, as I remember encountering it, and also seeing bug reports on it.

Its not a bug! Its a feature. The wiki
says so
;

  • Digging ramps upwards is useless unless the tile directly above is empty and there access to the side.
  • If you are digging upwards through rock, like a cliff, you may want to use a stair instead.
  • Ramps are easy to work with when digging downwards through a cliff.

Not a bug. Down arrow is only to inform you that there is a ramp on the lower level.

Also if you have a door above where you want the ramp the dwarves will dig the ramp while leaving the floor miraculously intact.

Whoops, so there WAS topics about this already :P http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=002176
Thanks for the clarification.. I suppose down-ramps are more like empty space then downward-staircases.

It's a pretty minor point, as the workarounds for it are pretty easy and direct.  The fact that there appears to be an empty space above the ramp is kinda misleading though.  I don't think people would have an issue with it if digging ramps worked the same way that digging stairways did (namely, marking an upwards ramps on z-1 and marking a downwards ramp on z).

So it's logical and expected that you can walk from one level to the next up a ramp... unless you need to dig out a tile adjacent to the upper half of the ramp? The dwarf has to traverse the top part of the ramp in order to get to the Schrodinger's square - whether it's dug or not. Once they're there, it takes all of half a second for a legendary miner to dig it. So why can't he?

Basically, a ramp is a special square on z-1 that allows a creature to move to any floorspace on z that's adjacent to the ramp.  The ramp itself is not on z, hence the reason that stepping on a slope from above brings you down 1 floor in adventure mode, and stepping on the ramp from below keeps the view on that floor.

When a miner is on the ramp he is still on z-1 and can't reach the stone wall on the floor above.  Which to me in a real-life sense is stupid, because where is that ramp going if it doesn't reach the upper floor?

That is incorrect. Dwarves are never on top of a ramp, not even when the adjacent tile is already dug out.

(This was especially annoying back when items would not fall to the bottom of a ramp and remained hovering in air, out of reach.)

Exactly. Jackard, I wasn't talking about game mechanics. I'm talking about common sense. Not dwarven sense, which we all know is not even close to the common sense designation, but if you're walking in a line from a to b to c, you have to walk through b. A is the bottom of the ramp, b is the top of the ramp, and c is the square next to the top of the ramp. The dwarf doesn't just teleport from the first centimeter of the bottom of the ramp to the square adjacent to the top of the ramp.
