[38C] No Continue Option after Saving
« on: March 24, 2008, 07:27:00 am »

Hey there everyone!

I'll just post this thread here, because I couldn't find a technical problems category.

I must say I'm entranced by your game, that I discovered two days ago.
I've been playing it two full days now... but I have a tiny (?) little problem.

Two days ago I started playing. I played all day, and in the evening I decided to go to sleep, but my game crashed while saving. (Totally my fault, I shouldn't have clicked on another  application while the game was busy saving).

The next morning when I started the game, I wasn't too surprised to notice that I was unable to continue a game. What DID surprise me was that I needed to regenerate another entire world.

So I did.

The next day I took some safety precautions by having the game autosave (with backup!) every season.
I played all day again, and in the evening I save and quit succesfully.

This morning I wake up, and notice that I once again have no continue option.
The only option I have is 'Generate world now!'.

Where did my saves go?! Or even my generated worlds for that matter?

I'm using version 0.27.176.38c (which should be the latest?) with the graphics pack by Mike Mayday.
I'm sure I can provide additional data and information if needed, but I have no idea what I should provide yet so I'll wait for a response first.

As much as I like the game, the thought of having to start a new fortress every day just isn't very appealing.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Mathijs

Normally saves are located in the Dwarf Fortress\data\save\ folder.  There should be a "current" folder, which, from what I've gathered, is used while the game is in progress, and then all the actual save folders, like "region1", "region2", et cetera.  Backups are named like "region1-spr-1051".  Let us know what's in this folder, and if there's anything suspicious about it (no folders, only the "current" folder, unexpected read/write permissions, and so on).

All the folders are there it seems, the region1, and all the backups (having various names such as 'region1-spr-1052'. There is also a 'current' folder, but it's empty. I tried copying all the files from one of the other regions inside the current folder to see what would happen, but the game deletes the entire content of the 'current' folder upon startup.

Seeing as you said this folder was only used for games in progress, I guess this is natural behaviour.

The weird thing is that all the other folders are there as normal though, and there seems to be nothing suspicious about them. They are filled to the brim with files (art-images, features and unit-###'s).

I did notice there is a file called 'world.sav' there, and it's size is 0kb.
I'm not sure how essential that file is, but it seems to contain nothing at all.

Very, and also quite big.  It's 22 of the 24M of my main DF save, and 21 of 27M of my adventurer save.

Are you perhaps out of disk space, to less than 20MB left?

No... though, now you mention it; He did keep complaining about running out of virtual memory while saving...

I... guess I lost my fortress forever then, eh?
Why do I keep ignoring virtual memory space messages? x.x;

Thanks a lot for the reply, I'll see if I can speed this computer up somewhat.

I'm afraid so.  If you've got the world gen seed, you could regenerate the base world and copy over the world.sav, but it might not work, and it could have strange effects.  Depends on exactly what's saved in that file.

No one knows for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that doing that will cause the (now unheard of) "Inflate -3" load error.

Actually, it seems to just bring me back to the 'embark!' screen.
No going back to saved fortress, it was worth a try, thanks anyway. ^^

I'll just start anew, as soon as I made sure this computer has enough virtual memory for next time. Perhaps generating smaller worlds helps too, I've noticed this can significantly reduce loading, travelling and sleeping times in adventurer mode.

Smaller worlds will make generating worlds easier, but I think what has a real impact on your gameplay and savefile size is the size of the region you choose to embark to. The default size is pretty big; try dropping it down to a 3x3. I know I saw a huge improvement in save/load times when I did that. This can make it harder to get a fortress that has "everything", but you don't need everything to enjoy the game.

There are even some "everythings" you might want to avoid, like aquifers.  Or carp.
