CPU Utilization
« on: October 29, 2006, 06:36:00 pm »

DF uses 90+ percent of my CPU even while paused with the music off.

In fact, even while just sitting on the title screen (the screen you choose "continue playing" or "create new world" or whatever from) with the music off.

What can it possibly be doing with all that CPU?

Waiting for a keypress? That's all it should be doing, right?

Seems like something is drastically wrong.  Perhaps fixing whatever is causing this would also decrease CPU utilization in "regular" game play, too - which should speed up play.

Certain other programs in memory seem to do this.  I don't use the CPU at all in that situation, and rarely get above 20-30 in actual play.  I forgot the one I noticed that jumped me up to 90...  something like JukeBox or MusicMatch JukeBox or something.  Some bizarre conflict.  I'm not sure what's going on.

What kind of CPU do you have Toady One? I have the same problem and according to task manager Dwarf Fortress is responsible.

2.59 GHz on my laptop.  When I have the software conflict, it also puts the CPU percentage on DF around 90.  But when I closed the Jukebox thing (which I don't have installed anymore), it went away.  Depending on your graphics card and processor, it could be all sorts of things though.  But the game itself isn't thinking about much.  You can try Kobold Quest and see if you get the same CPU numbers.  If somebody knows more about this they can also look at the KQ code, but it's kind of a mess.  The main loop sleeps like it's supposed to though, and it works out here.

I only get 20% to 30% used with DF running.

On my PIII 933 it takes about 65% of my CPU when it is running, and 15% when it is paused.  Oh, and that is with the music disabled.

with my P4 3Ghz I get around 23% max usage during play... that's with music... what's real funny to watch are dwarves with [SPEED:100] rofl... get like 80-100 of those zippin around and laugh til you drop   ;)

*EDIT* BTW normally runs at 7-10% til I get over 50 dwarves.
