No immigration and no traders
« on: December 15, 2006, 09:23:00 am »

I have a fort running into the winter of 2nd year that has had no contact with any civilization, including it's own. Aside from the metalsmith (with a peasant), no other dwarves have "invaded" my territory. I'm assuming it's because the dwarven traders haven't come and reported anything at all, so my immigration rating is still at default.

However, I looked at Bug 265 (traders not coming because of overestimating temperature) and it doesn't seem to be the case here; it is green halfway through spring until the end of fall. It has rained off and on, so I'm guessing the temperature should be decent enough for keeping the animals away from frostbite and death.

As well, I've noticed the distinct lack of animals and creatures on my map. I once was lucky to have TWO packs of wolves on at once, but usually there is only one set of four or five wandering around. I've had no invasions from creatures of the cave river or chasm, which is rather strange. In other games I didn't have cave river creatures, but the chasm and magma did attempt it a number of times.

I upgraded the game and continued old fortress. Now I have the same problem - kind of. I have all the civilizations listed and I was before visited by all three merchant caravans. Now however I get only goblin sieges and no caravans whatsoever.

What properties did your starting location have?

I'm at Temperate, Heavily Forested, Moderate Vegetation, Wilderness.  No problems with immigration, I've got caravans from all 3 groups, kobolds and goblins.  No sieges though, and I'm year 5.

From what I remember of it...

Temperate or Freezing (leaning more towards Temperate)
Heavily Forested
Thick Vegetation
Untamed Wilds

It was a new world created on the newest release (not the one just out with crash fixes). Only the parent civilization is listed.

The crash fix one fixes this, but it's not in the logs for some reason.  Bug 265 is listed as fixed in 0.22.121.23a though, so I think I just forgot to put a log entry.  Only the most freezing maps should have no immigrants/trade in the crash fix version.

Was the crash fix last version or the current one? After starting over, fresh, with the new version, I've noticed some odd things.

I'm on about year four now and things are going swimmingly, except I haven't seen a single goblin or elf (they were both present at the fortress selection screen). Not a thief, not a thing. Furthermore, there are, strangely enough, no NPC critters wandering around my map - not a deer or elephant in sight.

If this has already been addressed, then my apologies.

Oh, I have seen Human and Dwarven caravans. The map is a colder one, but not severe as I get full summers and the like.

Is it a swampy map?  You won't get anything there in the cold.  You should get elves if you have nobles.

It is a marsh, so I guess that explains the lack of happy little creatures to pummel; I still have not seen any elves or goblins, mind you, and my chasm is suspiciously benevolent to me. I think I saw a troll once, but now that I've chasmed some 1400+ pieces of stone, nothing has crawled out in anger. I don't know if that's at all related.

As for nobles? I've got a handful.

Edit: I haven't had anything crawl out of the river, ever, either.

Edit II:

I spoke too soon. Chasm activity ahoy.

If you have a manager, broker or bookkeeper, the elven caravans should start coming.  If you have a save I can take a look at it:

toadyone@bay12games.com or somewhere downloadable
region#.sav + region# folder in some kind of zip/rar
