New Fort Boredom Remedies
« on: January 04, 2011, 08:13:11 pm »

I don't know about you guys but I always hate starting a new fort. The fact is.....it's boring as all hell. It's the same old routine every time. Make a farm, dig out rooms, set up stockpiles, blah blah blah. Until you get some more dorfs you can't really do anything except survive at the most basic of levels and that, to me at least, makes for stressful yet boring gameplay.

So do you guys have this problem? I can't be the only who finds zoning dining rooms uninteresting. What do you guys do to alleviate this? What are your suggestions?  We must have ways of entertaining ourselves until we have enough dorfs to do something awesome and interesting!

Cause otherwise I'm left with embarking with no planters or something to try and force some entertainment out of this boring time in a fort's history.

Well, my next fort I'm planning is going to be restricted to a 10x10 tower.  That might spice up your embark.

Above ground forts with no mining is fun. Just make sure you have a place where you can get lots of wood.
I like Levi's tower idea...Think I'm going to do this for my next fort.

RP your dorfs. Get to know them and get more into their day to day struggles.

You can always start with more dwarves, I have a post up in the modding forum with more info. Quickfort is also helpful for mass designations and furniture placement.

Try creating an above ground fort entirely out of Obsidian blocks.

Massive value, masons working 24/7, 25 goblin raid in the 2nd year...

Start mining stuff immediately. Before you know it you've bumped your value up enough to get some 20 immigrants.

You're getting some 20 immigrants anyway.

It's the next bunch you have to work for.

I set goals for myself, such as the river-bed entrance to my latest fort.

Right now I got a fort going in the middle of the desert. No planting, few trees, and only a single small pond. This should be Fun.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions and keep them coming if you can. We all get bored eventually and could use some new things to try out.
