My 3 minor suggestions
« on: December 30, 2010, 12:59:15 pm »

3 little suggestions I'd like to see implemented, nothing game changing just minor things I think would be nice to have.

1: Reverse mechanical linkage. When you designate a lever or plate to link to a door/trap/bridge/ect... give the option to have it linked in reverse. So when the lever is in the On state, the linked mechanism is in the off state. Example: two doors linked to a lever, door two linked in reverse, lever is pulled to On, door one opens, door two closes, pull lever again and door one closes while door two opens.

2: Construction site hauling. When a non-furniture construction is designated, spawn a general hauling job to move the designated building material to the site before the mason/carpenter/ect... gets to the site. Only spawn there jobs with a valid manager, though don't require the manager to approve the job first. And only spawn the jobs after the building design phase (if any).

3: Rain collector floor. New floor type construction, requires blocks, looks and acts like a regular floor except that when it rains it spawns 1/7 water on top of itself just like a murky pool tile. Maybe make it so it doesn't stop at 7/7, so you have to take care your water tower doesn't flood your fortress in a heavy rain.

I like all of these ideas, especially the construction site hauling one. Linking levers in reverse would be very useful for traps, too. You could put an artifact on a pressure plate, that when removed triggers a lever which activates some kind of Indiana Jones-esque stonefall/magma trap. This could also work for jails: you could set pressure plates to lockdown the jail if even one of the plates isn't triggered. The cells would be 1/1, with food and booze dropped from above.

You can do 1 by pulling the lever before the link is made levers are never "on" or "off" they merly sent a single signal when they are pulled. As an alternative you could build a lever link it to whatever you want to desync and pull it once.

You've tested this then? I have, it has always been that levers and plates send a "I'm on" or "I'm off" message to linked doors/gates/bridges/ect..., and the linked stuff will change state to match.
Do what you've suggested then flip the lever and link another door, flip twice more and the doors will be prefectly in sync.

That only happens with gear assemblies. Everything else syncs its on/off state with the lever.

If I'm correct then they switch state regardless that wiki page is from a previous version of df. But it should be really easy to test...

I've tested this inadvertently in a recent game. Flipping the switch will forcibly sync things, unfortunately.
