The problem is probably rock bars.  He means metal bars :).  Get some metal going and he should then pick up regular stones after satisfying the craving for metal.

Even when I've got stockpiles full of steel.

Base material. It was a long time ago... even before 40d. It wasn't very effective in combat... it basically tickled the opponent to death.

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Lucky you that it was a shield.  Your military can keep that after you start making steel armor and weapons, since shields act the same way and have the same effectiveness regardless of material (well, not completely true, heavier shields will do more bash damage, but usually dwarves don't use them for that).
