Dwarven healthcare, meaningless and ruthless
« on: December 29, 2010, 05:14:48 pm »

So after an epic showdown with half a hundred of goblins riding voracious cave crawlers and crocodiles my military has became a ten dwarves smaller. Furthermore, my hospital was filled with injured dwarves, one of them being a hero of the battle and thus patient of higher importance for me. I've got a bunch of good doctors and splints and thread and cloth and soap. So everything looks like under control....
Aaand those seven doctors with all other labors disabled prefer to just idle in meeting room instead of justifying me not atomsmashing them just like other useless scum. Seriously, some of dorfs got infections while they were standing with no job queued. Threating to starve them to death and assigning them to burrow directly covering the hospital seemed to improve things a bit. hero got his single stitch he was waiting for a month, and most other dwarves were served within a week. But still doctors preferred to just chill out on the same tile with patient. And dwarf with almost every main bodypart injured still only got one suturing. (I believe he slipped and was trampled by every mount on battlefield; seriously, there are three pages of wounds on health page)  He isn't in hospital but burrow with medics encompasses his bed.

Which tricks do you use to ensure injured dwarf is taken care of?

Maybe this is patronising but did you have a chief medical dwarf with his only labour set as diagnosis?
Thats usually the fastest way to get the ball rolling.

I always enjoy getting those immigrants that are like "I can make soap and potash and lye and cheese and-" then I cut them off with a "Hope you like bricks!" as I turn them into a mason.

Keep the hostpital as close to the meeting areas as i can. Load the hospital with as many coffers and tractions benchs as will fit. Usually does the trick. Havent had any problems with the hospital aside from soap shortages in earlygame

If adamantine is perfectly rigid, as shown by having 0 strain at fracture in the raw files, then the speed of sound in the metal approaches the speed of light. Adamantine musical instruments would produce ultrasonic vibrations, and cut off the fingers of the musician.

No, he had some other doctoring enabled, but he wasn't performing any of those either. Just as second diagnostician did.

I also don't have any problems with it, until emergency. But when there's a dozen of injured I wish doctors would perform better than they did.
By the way very injured guy had received seven sutures, I guess they'll manage to finish his treatment just before he succumbs to infection.

That's the culprit, right there.  The Chief medical dwarf MUST have diagnosis on.  Nothing will happen until he has first diagnosed a patient.

It doesn't matter if the chief medical dwarf has diagnosis on, though it is not a bad idea to put it on.  Diagnoses will happen as long as someone is assigned chief medical dwarf, it doesn't have to be that dwarf.  Also, make sure that you have a traction bench and a regular table positioned orthogonally to the beds, or else the dwarves won't be put there to recieve surgery.  Other than that, make sure that the hospital has stuff in it.

I meant that diagnosis wasn't the only his labor. And second diagnostician has performed most of the job. So Namfuak is right here.

Hospital needs beds, everything else is overindulgence.  :D
Seriously if they don't have something in it they'll go and get that in fort (that solves the problem with incorrect hospital filling by dwarves). Splints are sufficient for immobilization, and after receiving one dwarf can leave the hospital. Surgery can be performed on the bed.
I've got some containers inside hospital but stockpiles fare better.

Looks like the problem I've originally stated has something to do with hivemind overload. First time I've reclaimed most of the junk immediately after victory. In the next siege I got after posting the topic, I didn't do that and looks like higher priority hauling jobs weren't preventing treatment from showing up on the jobs list. And injures were dealt quicker this time.
Well thanks everyone, I guess thats it.

I do wish doctoring labors had a higher priority, because right now it does seem as if everything under the sun is more important, including sitting idle in a meeting room for a week. Then the doc goes and diagnoses the patient ... runs back to idle again ... goes to sleep ... cleans the patient ... idles ... has a drink ... idles some more ... puts a suture in ... idles ... drinks ... eats ... dresses a wound ... idles ... drinks ... sleeps ...

Any by now a month has passed, several still-untreated wounds have become infected, and the blighter STILL goes idle instead of taking care of the patient. :( Even if I have 3-4 doctors all without any other labors enabled, none of them wants to treat the patient. But send them to haul or engrave something and off they are in a flash.
