Silk thread/cloth and plant thread/cloth are different things, and silk comes from one of two places:

1) Caravans
2) Cave Spider webs (usually in the caverns)

I wouldn't suggest digging into the caverns unless you've got a military ready to take on any potential baddies you find down there. If you accidentally dig into one, a reasonable protective method is to build up a fortification over the entrance so that only vermin (such as the cave spiders) can get through, thus netting you silk and keeping the cavern baddies separated off. For an early fort, if you have a chance, buy some crates of silk from a caravan and just hang onto it for moods until you get a stable source going in the caverns.

Huh. My cats usually enter the caverns minutes after my miners open one up, killing tons of spiders, thus killing my chances of a silk industry. I find the caverns to be an unreliable source of silk, and usually order the threads from the caravan.
