I'm at the start of Chapter 1 and my steel sword has completely vanished.  Any ideas?

I did a quick google search and got a ton of results from people who had the same problem. I think the best advice was this GameFAQs Thread about the sword.

Welp, I tried. So this happened in the Witcher 1? All the stuff I found was about swords disappearing in the Witcher 2. There's no console cheats in the Witcher so you either have to edit your save game, revert to an earlier save or tough it out without the steel sword.

Id push onwards there is a chance you might get it back in chapter 2. Anyway chapter 1 is still smewhat early and if you know what you are doing you can probably backtrack it in less than an hour.
