Are there any tricks to replicating this masterpiece?  I wouldn't mind having a massive river like that.  Oceans just don't cut it (and those stupid waves are just annoying).

Whoa, that's biggest river I've ever seen. Shame is it's only one level deep.
On topic, we all know the sole purpose of river existence in DF. They're there only to be dammed. Do it. Then go for steamboat.
Or place goblin entrance to the fort right next to dam.

I'll have to go with "Build a fort and endure the massive FPS slowdown you will experience.

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

Build a fortress overtop it with grates for floors. Get all food from fishing.
can you make three grate wide hallways?
I'm pretty sure grates need to be connected to something that isn't a grate

Floors with grates in the middle then.

+ = floor
# = grate

Where does the floor in the middle get support from?

Where does the floor in the middle get support from?

From its friends, who always know when it needs a shoulder to cry on.

This provides more than enough support, and ample grates to fish through.  For a more ambitious project, suspend the floors by attaching them to the ceiling with supports, in a staggered arrangement like this:

I####I###
###I####I
#I####I##
####I####
##I####I#
I####I###
###I####I

Bonus points for not littering the river bed with materials from deconstructed scaffolding.

Divert the river and dig the bed down a good 10 levels.

Divert the river and construct a pit that reaches the underworld, then fill all the caves with water. Watch as your CPU ignites.

Most major rivers are like 40 or so wide, that is clearly close to 80 without attempting a count...

Fifty seems more likely than eighty though that's still the widest one I've heard of.

5 fps would be blazingly fast compared to what would happen if that monster freezes all at once. Now, if it froze in sections, that's a recipe for Fun right there if the lower river freezes first since the entire river valley would flood. If the upper section freezes first, well, there's an easy dam and a dry riverbed to play with.

Anyway, if you don't want to use it, somebody else sure would. How about the World Gen info?

My counting may not be the most accurate, but I count 48 tiles across for that river.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."
