Motherboards - what to get???..
« on: January 06, 2011, 11:28:05 am »

Hey I have just started building my own computer and have just ordered the Coolmasters HAF X case and I suppose the next item on the list of thing to get would be a mother board, but I don't know what I'm looking for >,< and can't tell a shit board from a really decent one. So please could someone help me and recommend a good mother board? ( btw the HAF X case supports the Larger motherboards).

please and thank you :)

EDIT: my price range is about £250 max

well that depends on what do you want. What are going to build; intel or AMD processor? SLI or or Crossfire? are you going for gaming or Power? will this be entertainment only or you are running a server?

I'm haveing a intel i5 - i7 extreme (when I can afford it :P ), not sure of the difference of which is better between crossfire or SLI :P And would like a mix between power and gaming, the machine is mostly for gaming but it's nice to have alot of power behind it. The machine is for personal use, gamein, programming, browsing and the like.

SLI is for nividia and Crossfire for amd. Intel processors eh, i would wait for the Sandy Bridge chips to come out for consumers, they are cheaper and faster than the current ones but you have to wait for their Extreme line until autumn, besides the i7 2600K beats the 980X.

don't how they think these names all i know is they kick ass right now until AMD can wow us w\with their bulldozer chips. your case can handle atx boards and E(extended)-atx boards, i wouldn't get the E-atx boards unless you are shoving 3-4 graphics cards into the system which is ridiculous. I haven't seen any of the new P67 boards for the sandy Bridge's cards but i heard they suck because they don't allow you to utilize the Video Decoder engine and the Intel Graphics both at the same time on the chips (the new integrated graphics and decoder engine kicks ass for HTPCs). Z68 boards will circumvent that but thats till later in the year . i can tell you about current boards though.

The biggest thing I'd worry about with motherboards is reliability, and not everyone markets that. If you find one that mentions their low failure rate, go with that one.

I bought my computer from Puget systems (http://www.pugetsystems.com/), custom built by them. While I don't think you can buy motherboards from them (edit, yes you can), I'd definitely check out which motherboards they are using. They are well known for high reliability, which is one of their bigger marketing factors.

Pretty much any one you choose from ebuyer, as long as it's Socket1156 (supports i5, sometimes i7 processors - you need to check each one you're interested in, prefferably on the manufacturer's site), and has ATX format. That's all you need to have to avoid incompatibility. You can go for Micro ATX, but it sort of defeats the purpose of getting a larger case.(your case is of the ATX format, right?)
You can also check how much memory you can fit in there, but that should be 8+ GB for most new(e.g.those supporting i7 processors) MBs anyway.

All the additional features are just the icing on the cake, and are of secondary importance. You can look for a MB with a good soundcard on board, or a large number of USB ports if it suits your fancy.
If you'd like to put off buying a graphics card, then look for a MB with some integrated graphics chipset, which should let you play less-demanding games.
If you're going to buy a GPU anyway, then don't waste your money on a MB with a fancy graphics card integrated.

Also, as malimbar04 said, you could refine your search by manufacturer, but I'm not very much knowledgeable about those. As a rule of thumb, the more popular, the more trustworthy.

Here's an example for a 100 quid, with integrated 8 channel sound card, up to 16GB RAM, and crossfire support, even though I doubt you'll ever feel a need to use two graphics cards.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/191224
It does not come with any integrated GPU, as far as I can see.

This one is a few quid cheaper, but only allows i5 processors.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172655

You can spend more on your MB, but keep in mind that the bulk of the price will go into features that you'll probably never use, and/or integrated GPU, which will be completely redundant, if you're getting a dedicated card anyway.
