How do you swim?

I want to train my adventurer and was thinking of doing this by swimming a lot. My question is, how do you swim? How do you throw yourself into a river? If we're already here, how do you throw yourself off a cliff? I looked around the forums and the internet and couldn't find a solution...

You can move into the river with [alt] [direction], but make sure that you move below into the river and not into the empty space above it. In that case you will fall to the ground of the river and will be stunned and prone. If you are then dabbling or novice in swimming you will start to drown and panic.

If I remember my DF swimming lessons correctly you should search for a site with a ramp, i.e. an ocean or a lake. This makes it easier to get out when in panic. You should also not swim a lot in spring or autumn in temperate climates, there is a chance to get encased in ice.
