Idea of Insanity: Multiplayer Dwarf Fortress
« on: December 12, 2010, 02:17:06 am »

I had a crazy idea today. Multiplayer in dwarf fortress. Unfortunately the idea I had for df multiplayer would have to wait until after the Army Arc.
In fortress mode, you would be able to build special gates and/or devices that would let you send dwarves to other world (save games). This, combined with network support, would allow you to trade and possibly even attack with other fortresses.
Not sure how useful it would be for adventure mode, maybe allow you to transfer adventures to other save games, or if the networking in the game was good enough, then maybe you could have your adventurer running around an active fortress that belongs to someone else, while that person tries to attack you with military/trap you in magma/catch you in a cage/use you to vanquish a demon/give you pressies.
What do you people think? Pros? Cons? Any other ideas for a possible multiplayer scheme?

It has been discussed. It would cause enormous lag.

True. Though considering the idea I had would have been after army arc anyway, hopefully code optimization would go in that would reduce lag in general and such, before this went in. And fortress mode multiplayer could be abstracted (sieges and caravans you send are controlled by the game they are sent to as AIs and you only learn what happen to them when they return through the gate). Adventure mode would probably be cut from the multiplayer as I can see that having numerous problems working, especially if the modes mixed as the time scales wouldn't match.  :(
And with the idea I proposed, you wouldn't have to participate in multiplayer. Most likely the person wanting to send stuff(pain) your way would need your IP address, like with multiplayer in most simple games. But if there was a big multiplayer server set up so that anyone online can interact, then you could avoid the whole mess by not building your gate to other worlds

Too many threads to list.

Too complicated

It's called a 'Succession Fort"

Basically why it won't happen.

I have a feeling that such "region/world connecting" (not really multiplayer) portals will eventually make it into the game. "Eventually" being during the magic arc, and the magic arc scheduled as the last arc to go into the game before Version 1. Of course, something like this could also go into the magic work after version one.

This sounds like something that would have a huge buildup in-game with magical artifact collection quests, exacting mass rituals, god interaction, and/or great bloody sacrifices. At the end of which your game would be saved, and you'd get the option (which you could just exit the game from, and go back to by loading the save) to select another save to summon a hero from, or randomly generate a hero (by generating a world that generates a hero).
However, in the world you select, there needs to be a valid target. It isn't just going randomly zap out any character that "has enough skills and kills"; it would be ridiculous if your greatest dwarves were spontaneously vanishing or falling into portals at the height of their power. No, instead they have to ascend.
In their own story like a DwarfFortress/Player generated Captain Ironblood, they need to reach a point where they can say "I have grown tired of this world, and I long for the next one! Farewell, people of my homeland; adventure awaits!" then they blast their way through a portal to another world where incredible sacrifices have been made just for them so they can participate in a full blown war of the gods.

Edit: Ah yes, I did read some of this thread a few minutes before posting. It seems to tie together so well.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Oops.

Sometimes I forget that not everyone increases the topics-per-page setting.
