I have a feeling that such "region/world connecting" (not really multiplayer) portals will eventually make it into the game. "Eventually" being during the magic arc, and the magic arc scheduled as the last arc to go into the game before Version 1. Of course, something like this could also go into the magic work after version one.
This sounds like something that would have a huge buildup in-game with magical artifact collection quests, exacting mass rituals, god interaction, and/or great bloody sacrifices. At the end of which your game would be saved, and you'd get the option (which you could just exit the game from, and go back to by loading the save) to select another save to summon a hero from, or randomly generate a hero (by generating a world that generates a hero).
However, in the world you select, there needs to be a valid target. It isn't just going randomly zap out any character that "has enough skills and kills"; it would be ridiculous if your greatest dwarves were spontaneously vanishing or falling into portals at the height of their power. No, instead they have to
ascend.
In their own story like a DwarfFortress/Player generated Captain Ironblood, they need to reach a point where they can say "I have grown tired of this world, and I long for the next one! Farewell, people of my homeland;
adventure awaits!" then they blast their way through a portal to another world where incredible sacrifices have been made
just for them so they can participate in a full blown
war of the gods.Edit: Ah yes, I did read some of
this thread a few minutes before posting. It seems to tie together so well.
