Megaproject idea: Dwarven Ironclad
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:56:59 pm »

I've recently embarked on a coastline, as its one of the places I've never tried building a fort on. I generated random names until I got an appropriately maritime sounding one; Boatschance. Naturally, this means my megaproject will be a boat  :)

I know this has been done before, so I want to try something a little different. I have a ridiculous amount of iron in my present fort, so rather than a traditional wooden ship, I want to build an 18th century style ironclad.

Obviously mine is going to be much bigger than any of those in order to remain sufficiently "mega". I'm envisioning at least 3 decks, with a skin of iron surrounding a wooden interior. It will have side-mounted ballistae, and possibly catapult "turrets" on top as well. As the entrance to my fort is right on the coast, I should be able to have it fire on any invaders if I position it right.

What I'm concerned about though is FPS death. Am I going to get a lot of slowdown if I block off the incoming waves? What about if I build below the waterline? I know i'll need a lot of pumps, but what will this do to my FPS? Also, can I use waterwheels along the shore to generate power?

Basically, I'm still at the brainstorming stage given that my halfway-trained army doesn't have their steel kit yet, and I haven't even breached the caverns yet. But I'd like to know from anyone else who has tried such a thing... what am I getting myself into here?

Sounds ridiculously hard.  Which means almost dwarven.  (Dwarven meaning "impossible" with the quotes).  What would happen if you constructed it over the water and then dropped it in?  I guess that wouldn't work now would it...  Maybe you could drain the ocean enough to build the frame below sea level, and then let it refill?

You could build it at a dock to give it support and connect it to land so dwarves can reach it.

A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

If you have to ask, it's too much.

Dig out a dry dock and build it in there, then channel it out and let the ocean in.
BTW it would be 19th century.
Also, why build a scrawny little ironclad when you could build a whole battleship;

Well that's the idea. I'm going to build an ironclad the size of a battleship.

Drydock is a good idea, my laptop's CPU will probably thank me. I just need to make sure the drydock is positioned such that it can still fire on invaders. The ship will of course be connected to land via a pier, unless anyone knows of a way to seal it off without turning off cave-ins.

Build a clear glass support on the bottom and link it so you can pull the destruct-o-lever when you wanna finish with your fort.

With enough glass you could turn it into a Ship in a Bottle...

Just sayin'

Mega-mega-project:  Ironclad in a bottle!
Bonus: With a real removable stopper, preferably of corktree wood!
