Low number of z-levels in my fort?
« on: December 19, 2010, 11:32:53 pm »

I've been playing the most recent version, but when reading stories and stuff I've noticed that a lot of other people have up a hundred, or even more z-levels under their fort before hitting the magma sea. My current fort has a maximum depth of around 40 levels below the surface. Is this normal? How can I get extra levels?

My fort is built on a relatively flat biome, and here's my worldgen if it helps

Quote
  [LEVELS_ABOVE_GROUND:15]
   [LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_1:5]
   [LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_2:1]
   [LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_3:1]
   [LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_4:1]
   [LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_5:2]
   [LEVELS_AT_BOTTOM:1]

I think if you make these numbers higher, you get more space between surface-caverns, cavern layer-cavern layer, and caverns-magma sea.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

My current embark has 20 delicious levels above the first cavern, but the magma sea's only around 35. It's heaven.

My embark's magma sea is 135 levels below.  >:(
My caverns are at ~30, ~50, and ~70.

Embarking onto a mountainous area (or any high elevation) will give you significantly more z-levels before the caverns.

If you're at a low elevation, then no need to worry.

Personally, I love my 0 elevation embark - I build my fortress part above-ground, next to an ocean on the beach, and part below-ground, in the caverns.

thanks for the replies guys, I'm fine with having fewer layers as long as it doesn't mean my game is messed up :).
