Bone armor?
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:46:46 pm »

I was curious as to the effectiveness of bone armor. How strong or light is it compared to metal armor or cloth armor/clothes?

Better than cloth, worse than metal. In 40d it was comparable to leather, and I'd say in the new version it's equal or slightly better.

Masterwork bone armor is about as good as iron so if you don't have any metals than it is a good alternative.

Masterwork bone armor was precisely as good as no-quality iron armor in 40d, but remember the materials system changed dramatically in DF2010.

Bone armor is very good for your beserk dwarf killing squad to maintain order in your fortress. But if you fight any sentient with metal weapons, your people will get chopped up. New material system, new combat balance.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

It's very light and better than nothing, so you could justify it for dwarves who 'shouldn't need armour but might'. Maybe just marksmen intended to stay behind fortifications, maybe everyone not getting full steel armour.

That's more if you're actively looking for something to obsess about though... 'if it's not worth the bother/weight of metal armour, it's not worth bothering with' is a more practical approach.

Bone armour is not worth the hassle.

It's fragile and weak and serve as nothing more than as a symbolism.

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.
