failed floodgates & doors
« on: December 12, 2007, 04:36:00 pm »

This one is hard to describe, but it has happened in 33e as well as 33b .. and I can't see how its possibly something I was doing.

I have a double wide tunnel that extends down a couple z-levels to a 13x13 pit.  This pit goes down 2 z-levels to hold water.

Above the pit z-level, I have a room with channels cut into it as a water source room.. the intention is that the pit fills up, and I can then drink from the top most room like an outside source.

The 'drink room' has 2 doors, and the tunnel has 2 floodgates controlled by a single lever.    The problem comes from when i let the water run a bit too long, and the drink room flooded, but it was contained by the doors.  I pumped the room out from above, and went to fill the pit to the top again..

I opened the gates, then closed them right away, but even with the floodgates closed, the room flooded to 7/7 and the doors did not contain the water.  since then, water constantly flows much more then the 'stored' water would lead me to think.. flooding all my fortress levels from the bottom up.

Can doors fail under water pressure? can floodgates?  all were made from rock, and 'q''ing over the doors shows them closed tightly (not propped open like if stone was in the way).  The floodgate icons show as closed.

I recall seeing something about U-shaped water systems creating water out of nothing, so I guess that's why it flooded.
No idea how the water got past doors and floodgates though. Post a save?

I abandoned after i flooded by bottom 2 levels... I just couldn't get pumps working quick enough.

I'll just use a pressure plate to cut the water off next time, rather then rely on levers..   and an emergency pumping system maybe..   so many pumps though...

Remember that a water-presure-plate -> floodgate will OPEN the gate.  water-pressure-plate -> Door however will close and lock the door.

Just use an airlock system; two sets of floodgates seperated by a space equal to that of your cisterm. Open one, flooding the lock. Close it, then open the other, allowing the water to flow down into your cistern.

code:

███████████████
≈A     B ██_W ┼
████████     ██
███████████████

███████████████
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈B ██_W ┼
████████     ██
███████████████

███████████████
≈A≈≈≈≈≈B ██_W ┼
████████     ██
███████████████

███████████████
≈A    ≈≈≈██_W ┼
████████≈≈   ██
███████████████

███████████████
≈A     B ██_W_┼
████████≈≈≈≈≈██
███████████████

Tho if you make the lock a fraction of the cistern't size, you'll be able to refill it when it's only partially empty.

Heck, just put multipule floodgates in the lock channel and customise the amount of water you want to let in at a given time.
