Militia Commander

Trying to adjust my embarking crew for a new fortress and wanted to know more about the Militia Commander.  Trying to find a good way around teaching units with out my teachers getting killed too early.  Was thinking about having an embarking dwarf set as a basic military skills teacher(and make him the Militia Commander).   

If a Militia Commander is not in a squad will he teach/train other military units? Should he/can he be in a squad?  How do you guys handle training?

Militia Commander does nothing special really. His only function is to let you create squads. He will act like any other military dwarf. He is required to be the captain of your first squad in order to create more squads.

A danger room is one of the fastest ways to train soldiers. If you use this method, the teacher skill is near useless.

Use your militia commander to train new recruits, somewhat like basic training. Once they get competent, break them up into squads, then add more newbys to the militia commanders squad. Thus the Militia commander remains safe, unless a disaster(FUN) rears its ugly head. As a bonus, does not hurt having civilians carrying a shield, either.
 Shield training is great for new recruits, increases survivability, till you start churning out good armor for your regular forces.
