Climbing a tree in adventure mode and snatching the comb, causing all the bees to fly out and sting you to death! >=D

A couple statements.  First of all, there have been a few discussions about this already, and some people have even done modding to add it into the game.  It's been brought up, in other words.

Second, no apostrophe in "Bee's".

Haven't tried it out myself, so I don't know how it works.  I don't even know if it's compatible anymore.  Should be, though.


As for candles, there's not really any use for them except as a trade good.  There's no real "light" to speak of in DF yet.


If you have problems with the mod, lemme know.  It seems simple enough, so I might be able to help out.  Remember to back up any and all DF files before modding them.

Is it possible to make my own modifications to the raw files? It seems i can since there all in script format.

I wouldn't mind making my own mod's that would be great  :D

Until of course i break something hehe...

It's ridiculously easy to modify the raws.  Just type something different into the right text file, and you're set!  Practice lets you know what does what and where it should be put.  There's a section talking about some basics on the wiki.

We still need proper bees, which requires a bunch of features:
* 'swarm' type vermin
* creature 'nests'
* harvestable 'nests' (eggs from giant auk or other nests, honey from beehives)
* 'occupied' nests (for bees and other insects which there is always at least one member in the nest)

and yes whatever is in a nest will get pissed off if you don't have enough of some skill and you harvest it.

The Giant Auk bites the peasant in the head!
It is severed!
Oddom Voboknol, peasant, has been struck down.
The Giant Auk spits out the dwarf head.

Other fun features would be the ability to fire any item from a catapult, so firing an occupied nest would make the swarm creatures angry at whoever it lands near.

Sorry for being a grammar Nazi, but it's spelled "bees."

Anyway, I can see this working. However, they could only feasibly produce anything with warm outdoors. Insects have a hard time surviving in winter and in colder climates. In fact, that's exactly why bees produce honey, so they will have a reliable food source in winter.

Presumably, someone with a low animal caretaking or extraction skills would sometimes be attacked by bees, causing them to run away in panic and take wounds.

Bees could be all kinds of awesome in adventure mode.  You already disturb roach and rat nests.  Imagine disturbing a bee hive!

BUMPED since Toady appears to be working on domestic animals and their derived products.

And especially since clay is also under attention: wax allows similar forms to be made, although it can't be baked. It can be reused however. So I'm looking forward to wax crafts. (Somewhat related: if blocks can/should be used as the source material for crafts, then we also could make soap crafts.) If there's no time to implement bees or hives properly, then there could be hive squares on soil (like the termite/ant hills) where wax can be harvested. Or just make a "cave bee" stand-in that can be milked for wax.
