Error on continuing a fort
« on: December 05, 2006, 11:57:00 am »

Dwarf fortress crashed last night for some reason (just dropped me to the desktop with a standard Windows error report dialogue). I thought nothing of it at the time, but now it crashes when I try to continue the fort, giving me an "inflate error: -3".

Is there any info you'd like from the errorlog or anything like that?

Also, I don't really care if I lose the fortress to this, but is there any way to salvage the world?

Nope. All is lost. The inflate errors have to do with the world files. My condolences.

Just out of curiosity was there a human caravan loading/unloading at the depot when this happened?

I don't think so, no. In fact I'm fairly certain there wasn't.
I honestly don't remember for sure, though.

It is probably best to keep backups of all your region saves - I make a backup every time I finish playing, so if the game does have any problems, like accidentally flooding my entire fortress, humans not showing up or indeed the whole world going kaput due to inflate error, I can just swap it back in again. As each successive save proves to not have gone wrong on my next start up, I just delete the previous backup - otherwise, I delete the dodgy one and swap in the latest one which I know will work. Its a bit of a chore, but not nearly as bad as losing a 20hour fortress or a decent adventurer - or even worse, a world full of the things.

Yeah, backups are definitely the way to go.  The dreaded inflate errors destroy everything, and they are hard for me to fix, though I've caught a few of them.
