Just dig down.  ;)  If you dont embark on a volcano, then if you dig deep enough you will hit magma (unless the map is glitched)

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

And if your fortress isn't doomed improved enough to your tastes... keep digging!

A dwarf wants to heal.  A dwarf is motivated to heal.  A dwarf is, by Armok, going to heal or die trying!  Because if he doesn't heal, he doesn't get alcohol.

Under default worldgen settings, there's the surface, then some rock, then a big cavern, then more rock, then another big cavern, then yet more rock, a third big cavern, still more rock, and then magma. Magma can be quite a ways down there. Sometimes you get (un)lucky and manage to dig down through a pillar or somesuch in the caverns, so you miss finding them despite going past them, but (depending on worldgen settings) that can be pretty unlikely.

and sometimes the caverns are so tiny that they compose 60 tiles of space.  On one z-level.  But basically, go down to the very very bottom level of your map, go up about 10 levels, and thats about where you should hit magma (use a staircase when magma hunting so you dont channel a dorf into it.  lol.)

They should throw up a "warm stone located" warning before they open the barrel of fun.

True but there is the chance of digging down into a cavern with a magma pool/pipe under your dwarf.
