A Siege on Killerbees
« on: December 09, 2010, 01:31:59 pm »

It was a dark, stormy day at the fortress Killerbees. It was the summer, the short time of the year that there was rain in the normally freezing desert and the river thawed out. The rain didn't interest the dwarves, but the water from the river provided a lot of necessary stuff - irrigation for crops and drinking water, mostly.

So when the rain came, the dwarves were generally a little happier than usual. What could go wrong?

Veng Vushmuthkat, a planter, hurried to the river to get some water for an injured soldier. The zombie camels weren't too dangerous to the lightly-trained militia, but sometimes a lone dwarf charged into the herd before the rest of them could get there. Veng held the bucket tightly as he prepared to duck into the tunnel that lead to the safe, underground water source. But a bolt of lightning illuminated a strange shape in the corner of his eye. He looked over to the cliff on the opposite side of the river, but saw nothing. Then another bolt of lightning struck, revealing the cliff again.

"Goblins!" Atis Olondegel, a new recruit to the military, heard the cry and headed out towards the river. He was worried about the consequences of rushing into battle with no preparation, but kept to himself so his superiors didn't hear. The rest of the military charged behind him, giving him confidence.

They met the goblins in a narrow tunnel below the river that was used to cross it. A single speargoblin and about a dozen lashers charged from the opposite end of the tunnel. Atis threw himself at the first one he saw, but screamed as his torso was sliced in two by the speargoblin. The rest of the dwarves met a similar fate, with 20 military dwarves falling while the goblins lost only four lashers.

Veng the planter and several other civilian dwarves had been unable to get out of the tunnel before the militia charged in and had to step aside. They heard the screams of dwarves dying and attempted to flee, but the goblins overtook them. Before long, twenty more dwarves had died. The goblins hacked their way into the fortress and twenty more dwarves were gone in minutes.

In the end, a fortress of over 80 dwarves was reduced to about thirteen in the blink of an eye. The goblins left, fancying that they'd killed everyone but not bothering to check thoroughly. Four of the surviving dwarves were too injured to function, and one was a baby. All that remained were the bookkeeper, manager, expedition leader, three miners, a legendary engraver, and a planter.

Vukar Ibrukkilrud, the head miner, solemnly started carving out new tombs while Fikod Bimducim the manager decided to make some coffins. There was nothing else to do - they had enough food to last thirteen dwarves a couple years and enough crafts to buy a caravan.

"Killerbees will survive!"

a shame, a shame. untrained dwarves are pretty useless on the battlefield, these days. will die to a single blow in some cases. whips are very nasty.

Aaand the fortress is done. Every non-injured dwarf is insane or melancholy.

!!Elves!! would actually be kinda cool as a civ symbol.  !!Clowns!!, however, you get the impression they're on fire of their own free, malicious, evil, will.

Also, much scarier if literally clowns.

I thought this was going to be about trying to destroy a bee hive.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Hehehe... I forget which fort it was that came back from having exactly one child as the sole surviving dwarf. Way enough food to last until the migrants showed up, and all.
I think it may have been the Boatmurdered sequel but I forget.

Your fort was called "Killerbees"? That's awesome. The best name i've had randomly generated so far was Anusblood  :o

lashers, a shame
they're quite overpowered at the moment, so you would have been better sealing it off and letting the civilian die.
but that's not the spirit!  Charge into battle against all odds! Fight the fair fight and if you should die, at least die defending the fort!
I approve.

I named it myself.

Part two of the story, the final part that will take place in Fortress mode:

Snow fell heavily over Killerbees, obscuring the empty shell of a fortress that remained. Three dwarves hurriedly made coffins from the rock and placed them in rooms that were once bedrooms. Now the thirty bedrooms were useless, only one tenth of that many dwarves remaining.

Ninety dwarves had died in the last year at Killerbees, yet not one of the three dwarves had seen most of it happen. They had arrived very recently in a band of migrants that had brought the population to 14 dwarves. There were six dwarves there before them, who described arriving at the fortress and finding only death, three insane dwarves, six that had lost their will to live, two berserk dwarves, and an orphaned baby.

The three dwarves worked. They had carved about thirty coffins, one third of the number necessary to contain all the deceased. Not enough, not nearly enough. They didn't have to focus on food as they had traded the last of their goods to the dwarven caravan in exchange for much food and armor. Still, hauling dead bodies to mass graves was a tedious task, made all the harder by the zombie wildlife that guarded some of the corpses.

The population had been fourteen. Not terrible, definitely manageable. But when the goblin ambush struck with their deadly lashers, the human caravan guards only reacted quickly enough to save the three of them. The goblins must have been looking for the source of all the wealth exported from Killerbees, but it was just a dwindling supply of bone and shell crafts made by a bonecrafter long since deceased.

So the three trudged along, through the snow, gathering bodies. The entrance had been narrowed in case they needed to close it off quickly. Unfortunately, all three dwarves were far from the entrance to the fortress when they heard a voice.

"Release the trolls!" Two masses of goblins were surrounding the fort, one to the north and the other to the south. Trolls charged from the south ahead of the goblin force, snarling and lashing their claws at the flurries of snow.

All three dwarves rushed for the safety of the entrance, but they were no match for six trolls and two dozen goblins. One was literally ripped to pieces by the combined effort of all the trolls, while the others were given more mercy and quickly slaughtered by the goblins. The ghost of a wrestler gazed at the battlefield silently as the three died. He shook his head and disappeared into the blizzard.

"Killerbees has fallen."
