Below the third cavern
« on: December 06, 2010, 02:11:35 pm »

About how may z levels should be between the magma sea nd the third cavern. My fort has 153 z-s, and I want to move my fort below the third cavern. Should I be aware of magma stopping me?

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

In my case, it was about 5 z-levels. My situation might not be the norm, though, as I had a magma pool in the third cavern layer (magma pools connect to the magma sea in this version).

The answer to the OP's question is a very definite "It depends"...

Even if you go and specify an exact amount of z levels between the 3rd cavern and the magma sea, hilly and mountainous areas will often cause variances in the number.  Really the best way to find out is to do some exploratory digging, or if you are not afraid of 'knowing more than you should', you can always run dfreveal and have a look-see and know for sure.

'knowing more than you should'
Will use it now on this embark, used it once before in 31.12.

As long as you don't unpause you should have nothing to worry about.  Unpausing causes bad things to happen  :o

I understand the fun. I've had it happen before. (Not unpause, have the fun)

DFreveal currently triggers hfs without unpausing on occasion. Use at the risk of your FPS.

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

I use dfreveal to look around, kill the DF process, and start right up again.  That is if I really want to know, that is...

The only case where I have ever seen this happen is if you start designating things with the mouse.  For some reason each tile designated with the mouse causes the game to move forward one step.  The first indication I had of this was when I was seeing cats adopting dwarves while laying out my fort.  Did a little digging and learned about this.

In short, if you do nothing but look around while paused, dfreveal should not pop HFS.

Another question : Does mining out smoothed walls give bad thoughts, or only engraved ones?

Ok. I've gotta expand my meeting hall for my inevitable first ambush. A 7x9 meeting hall/bunker isn't gonna cut it for 42 dwarves.
Another question : Does mining out smoothed walls give bad thoughts, or only engraved ones?

Only high-quality engravings iirc.
Thanks for that info. However, from engraving my dining room my engravers will probably turn out masterpieces. Also, masterfully made dog bone bolts for everyone! I've made metal, just I need to get rid of the bones.
