Dwarves suspending construction
« on: December 03, 2006, 05:33:00 am »

I made a new world and a new fortress but I've been plagued with a bug where the dwarves don't even attempt to remove items blocking construction, the simply suspend the work. It started happening when I tried to set up a farming room, when I told them to build a few plots, which they cancelled with the message "unable to reach site" or something like that, and since then they have been constantly suspending any building job which requires an object to be moved.

They will not move objects which are being tasked for another job. So if you have a large stone stockpile, all stones are tasked to be moved there, and you won't be able to build on top of them. You'll either have to remove your stockpile or you'll have to wait until the stone is moved there.

If something like this isn't going on it's a bug of course.

Hmm... well when it started, I didn't have a large stone stockpile, but in an attempt to get them to clear the fields, I made one. I don't know whether that will have had any effect.

Typical issue for me for what you are describing is:

Order a Kitchen, Fishery and Farm Workshop...  Kitchen suspended because the rock underneath it is tasked for the fishery.  Similar stuff happens all the time.

Interesting, I recently had a problem with some farm plots too, I forgot that I could have been using the stone for some task.  I don't use stone stockpiles, but do have mason + mechanic + crafter going at full blast.

I read somewhere that the number of haul jobs is the lower of the number of items to be hauled and the number of Dwarfs who has that haul job enabled.
If this holds remove stone hauling from those dwarfs you dont really want to haul stones (might be all) and then you shouldnt have any or only few tasked stones left.

The jobs don't get cancelled when you reduce the number of haulers, though: that just lowers the number of haul jobs that get queued in the first place.  Employing haulers with only one or two types of hauling enabled does make both dwarves and jobs much more responsive, though.
