Graphics Card Recommendations
« on: December 06, 2010, 11:39:10 am »

It's getting to around time to replace my graphics card- I can't run recent games on anything but low graphics for the most part, but I have no idea what to get. I know I want an nvidia, because in my experience they tend to be more stable than ATI, but beyond that I'm clueless. I've got 4 cores, 2.7ghz, and 6 gigs of ram. Any recommendations for a good graphics card that I won't have to shell out a thousand bucks for?

You may want to provide information on your previous graphics card and your price range so we know what constitutes an upgrade. Needless to say, you probably shouldn't be having trouble with games with that system unless you have a low-end graphics card.

Buck up friendo, we're all on the level here.
I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

my current card is a geforce 8400 gs, but its old enough that its probably not operating at an ideal level. as for price range, probably 600 or 700 absolute max, ideally less...

Most video cards worth getting are less than $300 anyway.

Go ATI, the video cards are great performance for excellent value.

I've currently got an ATI 4870 on a computer comparable to yours, I've been able run everything I want to on maximum settings, without a massive performance hit.

Current NVidia cards are powerful, but seem to be plagued with driver issues and are more expensive for the performance you get. Like you said, they are reliable, my friend had an 8800 GT that served him well for the longest time, until he finally traded it in for an ATI 4850.
