It's the "working day"...  so...  the baby doesn't have a job yet...  so...  he's not actually addicted.  That's my latest excuse.

so, as soon as they become a 'child', who can run around and destroy bridges in tantrums, they're going to become addicted to it, as they'll be working the fields as a source of cheap labour?

Even in the past human children drank (often diluted)alcohol. It's a hell of a lot safer than well water with god knows what in it.

Children drinking alcohol instead of unsafe water, and working in the fields is not just historically accurate, its also the most intelligent thing to do in a historical context. Only now, when water is entirely safe to drink (at least in the civilized world), and most city folk have never even seen a farm, is it an objectionable idea. Plus using alcohol on a finger to sooth a teething baby is one of them good ol' fashioned remedies.

So if anyone has a problem with any of this, they can go screw themselves.

Since mom drank all through her pregnancy, it makes sense that the babies are born alcoholics.    :D

But it is ok, because dwarves don't use booze to get drunk.  Human drunks move slowly and work inefficiently, if they work at all.  Dwarven metabolisms seem to burn booze like rocket fuel, zooming around working tirelessly for hours.

...I'm kind of surprised nobody's made a pun about the topic title yet.
