channel into chasm knocks dwarfs off bridges
« on: November 30, 2006, 02:07:00 am »

I've got channeled water next to the chasm that is supposed to be a moat, with a little island near the edge that acts as a support between the very long bridges that connect the right side of the chasm and my fort, like so:

:(

You could make bigger bridges, but I think you'd still have the occasional dwarf fall off anyway.  Better to not fortify the chasm in that manner, and just make your moat defense around the river instead.

Neat idea, shame it didn't work.  I'd say its a bug, one of those 3D on 2D problems that are hard to fix.  Now you'll have to bring over a lava aqueduct and turn all that water into steam.

Is the water flooding from the river, or is the source cut off now and its just one big pond?

even if you build something simple like this:

............#####.................
............+++++.................
~~~~~~#####~~~~~~~~~~
............#####.................
..floor
##chasm
~~filled channel
++bridge
every second  dwarf crossing the bridge is a dead dwarf.
Well I'd definitely think its a bug since I can't imagine why or how its intended, as it prevents a legit base design.  I tried widening the bridges but all I got was more dwarfs pitched into the abyss.  The water flows directly from the river so I can't turn it off.  I had alot of trouble with my entrance moat (idiot dwarves and pets running through the empty channels only to be drowned when I turned on the water) that was controlled by a floodgate so I decided to avoid it with the interior one.
Anyways there's no obvious reason why this shouldn't have worked from a logical standpoint, since the water is flowing under the bridge not over it :/
Oh, you could just build bridges over *all* the chasm that's near the water, so that eventually the dwarves get onto a non-bugged area of the chasm bridges while floundering in the phantom water.  Granted that'll look kindof ugly but it should work.
Yeah I know, it's just that when I'd attempt to build bridges next to the ones already made the dwarf doing the designing would fall in.  Thanks to the way I designed the moat I built myself into a corner.
Yeah, that's a bug.  Another one of those flow problems where I'd be better off adding a Z coord into dwarf mode.
I noticed another weird thing to do with water and the chasm bridge. When you flood your fortress to clean out all the dwarves who have forgotten the fair and just ways of the dwarf-god, water travels across bridges over chasms, getting those hard to reach evil magma-working dwarves. I haven't checked whether floods cross bridges over magma yet.
