I finally found a suitable site at which I was at war with the elves, 1050 years in so they were quite large.  They came for me after a suitable amount of time, but before the first kobolds or snatchers even arrived, let alone goblins who arrived roughly a year later. 

There were about three ambush squads, to start with just swordselves.  Fortunately they use fuckin' WOOD.  My three hammerdwarves took them on and killed enough elves to make them run away, despite there being a couple dozen elves.  Still, it was way cool. 

The second ambush came a year later and was a little larger, and this time they included a lot of war animals such as elephants and lions, etc.  And a LOT of archers.  Many dwarves died to bring this forum this information.  Lots of Fun though.

I highly recommend anyone who sees WAR with elves to give it a go.

Yeah, elven ambushes are fun, but the wood equipment means that if you give your dwarves full metal armor, even copper, they're completely ineffective. Their war animals are much more dangerous than their elite archers. I'm currently working on a mod to make them much more dangerous, because it's just kind of sad as it stands.
