Odd fey mood
« on: October 02, 2006, 06:20:00 pm »

Ok so one of my metalsmiths just got in a fey mood, took over the kennels, made a tin ring and became a legendary furnace operator...  I assume all of those things are wrong.

Actually, the only part that is wrong is the kennels bit.

The furnace operating skill causes a dwarf to be classified as a "metalsmith" in terms of color and job description.  If they happen to get a fey mood, they're supposed to claim a forge, and make a small metal trinket like the one you described; this will max out their furnace operator skill.  This happened to me.

Yes, it is sort of bizarre, but I think the idea is that most skills should have a chance of going into a fey mood...  if they didn't, it would be disproportionately hard to bring some skills to legendary when compared to others.

Basically, when a dwarf goes into a fey mood, it just picks his best skill, and tries to do something with it.  A few totally, totally unsuitable skills get skipped over (like cooking, brewing, or animal care), but anything that relates even tangentially to a particular process, workshop, or material will usually net you an artifact finished good related to that subject, while maxxing out an apparently absurd skill.  This is the intended behavior, and not a bug.

Then why did a fisherdwarf of mine take over a craftshop to make a harp, and become a Legendary stonecrafter?

That one is easy.  Fishing doesn't count for anything, so it skipped over their fishing skill and fixated on the best skill it could find with some applicability to creating things...  which in this case was stonecrafting.

Although, when you think about it, fishers and fish-cleaners should probably make fishbone things...  well, whatever.

If they have no skills whatsoever I think it does a random crafting skill or something, so that might've been it, too.

Mining is used for stone working when it does moods.  I'm still of two minds on this auxiliary skills part...  some of it makes sense, sometimes.

Kennels though...  weird.

Just had it happen to me.  "Likot, Carpender has claimed a kennels."  I don't know what he's making yet (he's got acacia logs so far), but I'll make a save of this for you Taody.

I think I found the issue with the kennel claiming, maybe, but I won't be able to fix it for a bit.  Right now, it'll just make them take a little longer.
