Politically wise, it may actually help elect more sensible politicians, but that can be a double edged sword due to the anonymity of the internet. Basically, how do you hold someone accountable for their actions.

The idea isn't so much retarted as riddled with almost as many issues that we face in real life, and other issues that are found only on the internet.

The topic is still a good one for philosophical thought and argument, which may have been the OPs intent.

I feel I must be pedantic and point out that the entity you are all referring to is NOT the Internet, it is the World Wide Web. The internet is simply the network of servers and hubs on which the World Wide Web is hosted.
