the future of adventure mode ?
« on: November 23, 2010, 06:42:07 pm »

so I was wondering if in the future toady plans on making it so that in adventure mode time passes and history is recorded just as it is in fortress mode ? as of now the world pretty much stops if your not there correct ? basically will npc's still go to war , steal and murder if im not around in the future releases . right now the only thing that stops me from enjoying adventure mode completely is the fact that I am the only one affecting anything . so does he plan on implementing persistent world game mechanic ?

thanks in advance .

So basically your asking if things are happining around you, As if two nations at war you can be recruited to join in the war with a unit or wander across a battle field between two human nations, Or creatures attacking humans, IE walk into a town to find a dragons assulting it? Kill it and beacome the hero of the town?

something like that , basically if you go into legends mode and say the age of myth there are 100's of events but they all stop the year I started playing or check historical figures the only historical figures that are recorded after I started are the ones I killed or recruited . basically will the world live like it lives in fortress mode it would be nice to save your game go look in legends and find another warrior that has been very successful from an opposing faction then duel him then go back to legends and see in this year the duel between ____ and ____ occured . as of now everything stops people only continue fighting if your the one fighting them .

thanks for reply

Currently, history won't continue after world gen. No more murdering, warring, stealing, although figures (adventurers) still get generated, and the kills are modified to show that they died by you during some time at some place. I'm pretty sure in the far future Toady will make world history continue after worldgen.

World history stops even in fortress mode. Yes, one day it will be updated as it's part of his vision. The upcoming caravan arc may introduce some degree of dynamic world change after worldgen but we'll see.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Everything that is awesome and won't go against the game is planned.

It wouldn't be needed to make every turn or day really dynamic, but after some period (year?) of adventuring generate history of that period with the impact you've made on the world.

If worldgen is to continue whilst playing (as is the plan) I'd hope their is some way to know about events rather than just stumbling in on them or constantly checking legends every week. Maybe some sort of newspaper each month or so which details the major events (such as wars) or actions by major empires in the world. Smaller events you should have to find out for yourself through travelling

Maybe regional papers (or bards for civilizations which don't bother with writing much) which have differing viewpoints on events. Example a party from a goblin kingdom attack a human patrol. The human paper could decry it as a cowardly attack whilst the goblins paper/bard could claim self-defence (news doesn't have to be truthful :P), which each side encouaging adventurers to join their side.

I would like to see a persistent world too, how its handled would be interesting, since an entire world taking up rescources would be insane for our computers. Perhaps in adventure mode, any local events play out in real time (ie, as you stumble across them) but any that you dont come across, or are a bit further afield are calculated at the end of each day. Even wider afield is dealt with once a week or a few days. Stuff on the other side of the world could be calculated much less often. This can be represented by information travelling slowly, so that the local stuff comes to your attention quickly, but something in another country takes a long time to reach you. If information was passed in an informal manner - rumour etc from locals and then more factual info from nobles/leaders etc

As for how to mark important events on your travels, perhaps similiar to how you uncover caves and camps.
You have found a battle
You have found a recent battlefield
You have found the site of an old/ancient battle

And if you arent fast travelling, perhaps pop up such as 'You hear the sound of battle to your N/E/S/W' and then have it marked out on your list of locations on the top left.
