Helping a Newbie
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:56:25 pm »

Hey guys

So, I'm an avid fortress player, love to make all those beautiful magma traps obsidian towers.

But I long for the adventurers life, and now with the recent additions I am dieing to try it.

But I am in dire need of your help, for I have several questions on the most usual strategies here. I know I'll probably just piss someone off by making this thread, but please, humor me.

1: Multi equipping
I have tried equipping several shields and armors, but cant really do it, anyone can give me a step by step?

2: Skills
Should I invest heavily on my weapon skills? my armor? dodge? How do they affect the starting equipment?

3: Companions
What are the best companions to have?

4: Trading
This one baffles me, I try buying stuff and get attacked for stealing it... completely lost on this one.

Thanks for the help guys

Multi equiping I don't know, Skills you should invest in armor weapon and dodge, And fighter, And shield user. Make then about 8, With main weapon as 9.

For attributes MAX OUT AGILTY, It is very useful allows faster movment and better aimmed attacks.
For All I know the onlything skills do againsit starting equipment is give you the weapon itself, And sometimes you getl ucky and actually get armor

Companions are just meat shields.. But I would recommend any meele fighter

To trade simply walk in the shop talk to a person and say "Trade" Or something like that, It will bring up a menu whitch you go to yourside click was was it t? or enter then go on there side and click what you want then click eneter also make sure to make them pay you as much as possible or a lest you pay them if buying. Then exit out of the screen and cheak the shelfs for the item. If It has a $ Its still there property and takeing it would be stealing $-Iron Axe-$ Don't Take -Iron Axe- Take

In my opinion the easiest way to to trade is to take them item you want, go to the shopkeeper and trade

the item you are holding will be highlighted green

you can now negotiate with your items or coins (I personally prefer item bartering as I find coins pretty useless, and I dont care if he overcharges me because I have no use for a +large ruby+)

when this is done you will automatically drop your bartered items, any gold he owes you will appear on the table near the back of every shop in the middle, and since you will already be holding the item (as detailed at the beginning of the post) you can just leave the shop, no hassle.

Or of course you could raid the armour store first and not care if they attack you with their puny cutlery

I do that too, and make it a habit to test fast travel  before I go, to make sure I'm not holding anything I haven't paid for. The sleep key works, also.

That's gold. Thanks for the info man, will make my life so much easier. Hated digging trough every pile in the store to find what I bough

1: Multi-equipping: You can use the p key to put stuff into your backpack, so try putting shields in your backpack they will be highlighted in green if they're in the bagpack. You can then press r to remove stuff from your backpack, removing shields from your backpack will multi-equip em in your secondary hand it's a bug really.

2: Skills: I suggest getting equal/similar and good armor, dodge and shield skills. (I always get more shield skill though. Also novice swimmer and then weapon skill. You will survive better if you can dodge and block enemy with shield than if you can kill enemy easily but easily get hit too.(In my opinion lol)

3: Companions: Lashers use whips they're pretty good, there's not really best companions they can all train when fighting stuff with you, even peasants can be epic in their own ways with their little knives. (I try to combine skills for example if I'm swordsman i want my party members to complement my skill so i get a hammerman, spearman, etc... (Bow or crossbowmen can be useful but they get taken down way too easily and you will often get ambushed and circled so they better when starting out.

Ahhh, multiequipping is surprisingly simple then. Thanks again.
And one more question. I started playing, and have found some armor. Iron gauntlets (left and right) and bronze greaves, to be more precise. How do I equip them? I tried using the W(ear) command but it wont let me. I managed to put the gauntlets on my hands by taking them out, but when I tried it with the graves they were on my hand as well, so I suspect I'm only holding everything...

First, make sure you don't have greaves or gloves/gauntlets on already, if you do press r and remove them. Then press the lowercase w(ear) to put them on. You usually start with gloves on so that must be the case.

Thanks man, I'm finally getting the hang of how to manage my stuff. I'm now wearing both gauntlets and the graves, they show up in light blue when you are wearing them right?

On another note, Thanks to you guys helping me out, I am a proud leader of 5 female swordsman (should they not be swordswomen?) and after killing a night man and his spouse(as well as some bandits) I am know across the land as Upur Tucgust Thuthu Takru. How do I know what all that means? Hope it's a cool title...

I too haven't figured out how to find what my title means easily... The way I figured out is by copying my save, then retiring in that save, and going to legends. It shows up there. However I think there might be a more obvious and easier way but I couldn't find it.
And yes, it shows up in blue if you are wearing it, and it also says where you are wearing it. Remember you can wear more than one item in most places.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Armor
It says there a bit lower how many things you can wear at a time.

Tried equipping some more stuff and found out I can put a hood and a turban with my newly found masterwork iron helm. Do they help to mitigate more damage or is it only the helm that counts? Just checked out the link, thanks for it!

And I found out how to see what your name means. Just talk to anyone and you will introduce yourself with the translated meaning.
I am Upur Whiskviolence the Tufts of Justice!
Kinda cool

And I have now been charged of a Ettin disposal job. Keep in touch to find out the grizzly fate that awaits me!

**Update**
Never in my life have I cut trough so much fat... the thing just took my slashes like they were nothing... Until I had the chance to easily strike at the left head, which I promptly bit and raked till my enemy was no more!

That was weird...

**Update**
Now we are talking. My next target is Akera Gildpearl, a dragon! Maybe I should go to the capital and buy a better weapon... my copper shortword was next to useless against the Ettin, and if it wasn't for my fierce bite I might have died in there! Plus, it will put my bartering skills to test, lets see if i can finally buy something without becoming a thief...

** Final Update**

Well guys, thank you so much. I bought a wellcrafter bronze longsword and a well crafted iron chainmail, and set to travel, The dragon's lair was close, and my team could hear the beast roaring. We entered it's lair end looted some nifty items ( a well crafted bronze helm, 2 iron low boots) and attacked. Before I could even test my sword on the beast the lasher promptly caved in his brains. So much for me being the hero lol. Unfortunately his clothes got on fire and he died, but he was kind enough to let me get his wellcrafted iron breastplate with the symbol of my civ on it.

Now I am out to kill one more Dragon, and its all because you took the time to answer my stupid noob questions. Let me know if you guys want to know more about Mr. Upur, I consider him as much my adventurer as yours.
