Yet interesting, so it's not as bad as it could be.

No.  Webster wanted us to say "laf," "tuf," etc. but they didn't let him go that far.  Most words like that are still there, but we say pronounce "draught" with an F and for the longest time I thought "draught" was pronounced "drot"
Uh... we pronounce "draught" with an F.  If you mean the spelling, we'd generally spell it "draft", unless we're referring to the boardgame.

The thing is, "ough" is a complete minefield, even if you take out "uff"...

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Cloak and clock have the same etymology, because the cloak is usually bell-shaped, and the word that we use for clock also meant bell in its original language.
